ChatGPT now shows ads. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on February 9, 2026, expanded the pilot to Canada, Australia and New Zealand in March, and by August 11, 2026 launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea — with more markets planned this year (OpenAI announcement). If your customers ask AI assistants for recommendations, this changes the landscape you compete in.
What ChatGPT ads actually are
According to OpenAI, ads appear for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers; paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education tiers do not see them. Crucially, OpenAI states that ads are clearly labeled as sponsored and do not change ChatGPT's answers: the organic recommendation you appear in (or are missing from) is generated independently of who is advertising.
That means a sponsored placement and an organic mention can now sit in the same response — a competitor can buy visibility right next to the answer that recommends (or ignores) you.
Why this makes organic AI visibility more valuable, not less
- The answer itself is still earned. OpenAI's stated principle is answer independence: you cannot pay to be recommended. The brands the model names come from what the web says about you — your content, citations, reviews and third-party mentions.
- Ads raise the stakes of being absent. If you are not mentioned organically and a competitor advertises on your category prompts, the user sees only them. An organic mention is your defense that no ad budget can remove.
- Buyer attention is consolidating. Advertisers only spend where buyers decide. Ads inside AI answers are the strongest signal yet that AI assistants are a real decision channel, not an experiment.
What to do about it
You cannot control the ad slot, but you can control the organic answer. Three practical steps:
- Measure where you stand today. Run the real buyer questions of your category against live AI models and see whether you are mentioned, who is recommended instead, and which sources the answers cite. You can do this in 30 seconds, without signing up, with a free Geovory check.
- Fix the gaps the evidence shows. If AI answers cite directories or review sites you are absent from, get listed there. If your site blocks AI crawlers or lacks the pages that answer buyer questions, fix that first — our reports turn each gap into a concrete action.
- Verify that changes worked. AI answers move. Re-scan after you publish or fix something and compare mention rates before and after, rather than assuming the work paid off.
Honest limits
Geovory measures organic AI answers via model APIs; sponsored placements shown in the ChatGPT consumer app are a separate ad layer that we do not track today. What we measure is the part OpenAI says advertising cannot buy: the independent answer. In an ads era, that is exactly the part worth measuring — and improving.
